One hundred years ago seems like forever, right? No way someone that was considered to have the ‘perfect body’ could be thought of having the perfect body now… Wrong. These are a few examples of beauty standards over 100 years. They is about the same amount of beauty and uniqueness in each photo and era.
Huffington Post put these images together looking at the difference of the ‘perfect body’. These images are of women who would be looked upon to star as a model or in a movie in these eras.
The Gibson Girl
While these beautiful women are in the spotlight, they do not seem like they would be classified under the Other in regards to Beauvoir’s The Second Sex. Men are more valued than women and are seen as the Self and in the transcendence stage of life while women are valued less than men and are seen at the Other and are in the immanence stage of life. These women who have built their career in Hollywood do not seem to be living an immanence, survival stage, lifestyle. They seem to be thriving and enjoying themselves. Of course, this is only the outside image of the women. I believe these women through the decades have shown society that women can, and will, move into the transcendence stage of life is they can prove to themselves first that they are the world it and work hard to make those goals a reality.
